Dr. Lowenberg's Spinal Stabilization Program
Featuring the Stability Ball
The spinal stabilization program using the stability ball is based on sound and proven principles which have been developed over the past 50 years. It is structured to allow participants who would not otherwise be able to perform certain movements to exercise safely, with the ball permitting the participant to exercise their entire body with reduced stress, while concentrating on body awareness, coordination and balance, rather than strength alone.
Dr. Lowenberg directs four basic classes, from an introductory level to and advance class that is designed to both strengthen core muscles and provide vigorous workout. All of his classes utilize "Therapeutic Comics' Prescription Exercises for the Stability Ball," a exercise manual designed to look like a comic book, which is colorful, entertaining and has proven to be more accessible to participants than standard exercise books.
The four classes that Dr. Lowenberg directs are an introductory class that explains proper procedure and emphasizes safety, a beginners class which is 15 to 20 minutes in length and teaches the average person balance and stretching, an intermediate class of 30 minutes in duration and an advance class which lasts 45 minute and can be categorized as difficult and challenging.
In addition to the exercise ball, Dr. Lowenberg also incorporates medicine balls and stretch tubing, in order to work all parts of their bodies. This program is complete and safe, improves core stabilization and strength, and benefits many types of fitness goals.
The principles of this program are grounded in exercise physiology, neurology, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation and psychology. By utilizing an inflatable exercise ball, fitted to the patients height, he or she is able to take advantage of the round surface which allows the body to adapt muscles in ways which are not possible or practical when performed on the floor or with traditional gym style equipment.
Each exercise taught to the patient will isolate group’s of muscles while recruiting other groups to stabilize the spine in order to obtain maximum results. In essence working the core muscles also known as postural muscles, This will provide reinforcement and protection of the spine during lifting maneuver. The patient will receive approximately one hour of instruction per session which includes: Demonstration, participation, lecture, personalized feedback and appropriate adjunctive manual therapy, Written materials with illustrations are provided. The patient is able to see and measure his or her own improvement through increased repetitions of exercise which progressively become more difficult, and decrease pain.
